IGS Round Square Programme – Bonding with the next generation

A Director at Bundaleer Lodge Nursing Home was inspired by a news story where students from a local high school catalogued the memories of senior citizens. Director, Lynette Dresselhaus was so taken by the idea she approached the Headmaster of Ipswich Grammar School (IGS) last year, Mr Richard Morrison, and a program was devised as part of the schools Round Square program, which encourages students to give support to people all over the world. Residents at Algester and Bundaleer Lodge has had visits from students since, and found it rewarding and exciting.

Some of the comments from residents have been “I am very impressed with the exceptional manners of the boys” and “I cannot believe how young boys could be so well mannered and lovely”. At Ipswich Grammar School, the six IDEALS – Internationalism, Democracy, Environmentalism, Adventure, Leadership and Service – form the cornerstone of the Prep to Year 12 Wellbeing framework. As part of the Round Square program the year 9 IGS students are visiting the residents of Bundaleer Lodge Nursing Home and Algester Lodge. The boys ask their new friends about their lives, listening to fascinating stories of the old days. The students will then compile these stories into a written document and present as a “This is Your Life” project which will be presented to the resident at various times during the school terms. These stories are related to something important from the residents’ lives.
